Wine in Moderation-Art de Vivre presented at the 10th Congress on the Mediterranean Diet
Between March 31st and April 3rd, the Spanish edition of Alimentaria 2014 celebrating our food heritage took place in Barcelona. Fivin and the Foundation for the Mediterranean Diet took the opportunity to organise the 10th Congress on the Mediterranean Diet with the aim of disseminating the latest scientific evidence supporting the Mediterranean way of life as the backbone of prevention of many diseases and promotion of both physical and mental health.
The Congress that was opened by the Spanish Health Minister, Ana Mato, focused on Mediterranean food products on the first day and dedicated the second day to wine as integral and important part of the Mediterranean diet.
Leading international Scientists discussed a variety of scientific evidence explaining the role and effects of wine as part of the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle.
During the conference session about sustainability, the Deputy Secretary General of Federación Española del Vino, Susana Garcia Dolla, presented the Wine in Moderation – Art de Vivre (WIM) programme and its implementation in Spain.
As one of the largest awareness campaigns developed for the responsible consumption of wine, the campaign: “Quien Sabe Beber, Sabe Vivir” was very much applauded as a valuable and recognized initiative.
The traditional Mediterranean diet, native to the countries of the Mediterranean area, is characterised by a high intake of fresh fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, cereals and fish and a low intake of meats, especially red, with olive oil as the principal source of fat, and of course the moderate and daily intake of wine, usually red, during meals.
