“Wines and Lives” a new initiative at the Complutense University of Madrid in collaboration with OIVE

Wine culture was included in this year’s Summer Courses of the Complutense University of Madrid Summer Courses for the first time, through the activity "Wines and Lives", an initiative of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, with the collaboration of the Spanish Wine Interbranch Organisation (Organización Interprofesional del Vino de España – OIVE).

During the three-session course, different experts – not only in nutrition and health, but also in literature and history – shared their knowledge about the influence of wine in the culture and history of civilizations, as well as the benefits of moderate wine consumption and its role in the Mediterranean diet. Wine in Moderation was also presented as the international program of the wine sector that supports wine professionals in encouraging moderate wine consumption and educating consumers on the risks of excessive drinking.

The activities featured top-level speakers such as Ramón Estruch, Scientific Coordinator of the Foundation for Wine and Nutrition Research (FIVIN), Montaña Cámara, Professor of Nutrition at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the UCM and former President of the Scientific Committee of the Spanish Food Safety Agency (AESAN), and the renowned writers Antonio Pérez Henares and Luz Gabás.

The first edition of “Wines and Lives” confirmed that wine is an integralpart of Spanish culture, traditions and way of life, as well as a fundamental element in healthy lifestyle habits if consumed in moderation.
