Mediterranean Diet Congress reveals links between of diet & health

26-28.04.16, Barcelona, Spain. Celebrating the 20 years of existence, the Mediterranean Diet Foundation held the XI Mediterranean Congress during Alimentaria.

Once more, the Mediterranean Congress was a great opportunity to learn more about the latest scientific research about the Mediterranean Diet, health and a moderate consumption of wine.

The keynote speaker, Prof Iris Shai from Ben Gurion University, Israel, presented her recent study about the effects of wine on diabetes, and her conclusions showed three main results:

  • a moderate intake of red wine as part of a healthy diet is apparently safe and modestly decreases cardiometabolic risk,
  • the differences observed between red and white wine are small and beneficial effects are mediated predominantly by alcohol per se,
  • red wine’s effect may be attributed to non-alcohol constituents as well.

The Congress was attended by renowned scientists affiliated with prestigious universities from all over the world.

Wine in Moderation was also invited to take part in the Congress. The presentation focused on the pillar of scientific documentation of the Wine in Moderation Programme and was also the opportunity to discuss the recent updates of the drinking guidelines in some countries.

The Mediterranean Diet Foundation and FIVIN, organisers of the Congress, are both associated partners of the Wine in Moderation Programme.
