Wine in Moderation at the 'Prohibition, 1919-2019' Symposium
2019 marks the 100 years of the prohibition in the United States. In this occasion, the Institut « Georges Chappaz de la vigne et du vin en Champagne » and the University of Reims, a Wine in Moderation Observer, organised an international symposium “Prohibition, 1919-2019” to address a number of themes linked to this historical period: law, history, economics, ethics & consumption.
Organised under the patronage of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine and with the participation of several academic and institutional partners, the conference approached that particular period in legal, historical and ethical terms. Through interactive sessions, the participants tried to understand the driving factors of this unique act and to understand its impact not only in that historical moment but also in our modern societies.
Dr. Marjana Martinic gave the keynote speech opening the closing session on wine consumption and focused on science, communication and policy, helping participants better understand today’s headlines and the current scientific evidence. The panel discussion which followed saw a lively discussion with Stylianos Filopoulos, director of Wine in Moderation, Joël Forgeau, President of Vin et Société and Prof. Theodore Georgopoulos, Associate Professor in Law School at the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne.
