With the goal to increase wine experts’ professional and personal competences, the Deutsche Weinakademie (DWA) has taken the initiative to offer a one-day Wine in Moderation – Art de Vivre seminar to a number of them. Wine professionals are often first in line when talking to consumers; these professionals should thus be well informed about issues regarding the responsible consumption of wine.
In order to give a complete overview of the various issues at stake, several subjects were discussed during the first part, for instance: the current alcohol policies, the legal framework and the wine communication standards (the wine sector’s self-regulation code). The presentation triggered many discussions and participants were surprised to learn more about certain legal restraints.
Health benefits of moderate wine consumption as well as the risks of excessive intake were also further explained. Focus was put on wine and health and on the different drinking patterns. Several factors should in fact be considered when consuming alcoholic beverages, it is not only how much one drinks but also how they drink and who should avoid drinking. In certain situations and among particular population groups, alcoholic beverages should indeed be avoided (drinking with or without a meal, pregnant women should avoid drinking, etc.). Wine experts should be aware of these guidelines in order to correctly inform consumers concerned.
To increase the participants’ consciousness of the topics discussed during the day, the latter were asked to calculate their blood alcohol level after a fictional party evening. Many were surprised to see how much their own assessment deviated from the actual calculation. All participants agreed to say that this one-day seminar had been very useful and that they had received a lot of valuable information.
