Sogrape Vinhos repeats breathalyser tests at Essência do Vinho

22 February 2018 - 25 February 2018
Location: Porto, Portugal
Organizer: Sogrape Vinhos

Country: Portugal

Sogrape Vinhos was on stage once again offering free breathalyser tests to visitors in the occasion of the 15th edition of one of Portugal’s leading consumer wine fairs “Essência do Vinho”.

With the aim to promote the Wine in Moderation – Art de Vivre programme and to raise awareness about the risks of drinking and driving, Sogrape Vinhos carried out 1180 breathalyser tests, which revealed values between 0 and 4.0 g/l (caused by residual alcohol in the mouth after tasting).

In previous experiences, the team responsible for breathalysing the participants noticed that the results of breathalysing can be different if you take the test immediately after tasting wine and 5 minutes later. For the first time they therefore decided to repeat the test in case of high or seemingly altered values. In these situations, the team offered biscuits and water to consumers before repeating the breathalyser test and it was very interesting to see that all repeated tests actually showed lower values i.e. a 43 years old woman, weighing 62kg and measuring 1,64m, saw her test drop from 1,19g/l to 0,61g/l, after waiting 5 minutes, while she had some biscuits and a glass of water.

Along with the tests, over 1200 brochures were handed out to participants. These brochures contained guidelines for low-risk consumption, units of measurement and the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limits for driving in Portugal.

Driving indeed requires physical, visual, auditory, tactile and psychological abilities which become affected with the consumption of alcoholic beverages. It is always advised to avoid drinking when driving.

Through this initiative, Sogrape Vinhos has reached over 5490 visitors with the breathalyser tests program in the last five editions of “Essência do Vinho”.

The Wine in Moderation breathalysers actions held in Portugal were presented during the last OIV meetings, where the Portuguese authorities took the initiative to call for a resolution to standardise a breathalysing approach.
