The DWA, one of the founding members of the Wine in Moderation-Art de Vivre (WIM) Programme and Association, has been carrying out its commitment to raise awareness and knowledge on appropriate drinking patterns in a consistent and ever expanding way since the very beginning.
Its important involvement in spreading the WIM message and its engagement in education and dissemination of scientific information is not only recognized by German Authorities, but will also place Wine in Moderation at the heart of the next OIV Congress to be held in Mainz, early July.
An important Roundtable
Last 18 March, the Parliamentary Wine Forum with several representatives from all parliamentary groups invited to a roundtable discussion where the WIM Programme and its German implementation were presented.
The Deutsche Weinakademie builds its implementation of WIM around concrete actions to encourage responsible consumption and reduce the harmful consumption of wine. Such activities include the dissemination of evidence-based scientific information about the health benefits of wine drinking and risks of abuse as well as educating consumers and especially wine professionals on the responsible consumption of wine.
Highly renowned German representatives were present, among whom the drug commissioner of the German government – Marlene Mortler, the parliamentary State Secretary – Peter Bleser- and the rapporteurs from the Agriculture and Health committees. The participants recognized the contribution and the offer of the DWA (on behalf of the German wine sector) as a very positive initiative, especially in education. Moreover, the WIM message of “when to avoid drinking” was also highly welcomed by Commissioner Marlene Mortler, who also called upon the wine sector to focus their communication on information about the detrimental damages that alcohol can cause to the newborn.
WIM at the 38th OIV World congress “Progress and Responsibility”
The recognition of the Wine in Moderation-Art de Vivre programme doesn’t stop with the endorsement of the programme by the German Authorities. The 38th World Vine and Wine Congress organized by the German Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture and the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) will focus on the key issue of "Progress and Responsibility" and will address the topic: Wine in Moderation – responsible consumption as a global movement during a joint Technical Meeting on the first day of the Congress.
Furthermore, George Sandeman, President of WIM Aisbl, will be a keynote speaker of the Congress presenting the success story of the Wine in Moderation – Art de Vivre movement, and highlighting the path of the programme: from a European perspective to an international movement.
German WIM Ambassadors
Besides the efforts of the German wine sector all these years, it has stepped up action to engage and empower opinion leaders as WIM ambassadors. Because of their position and their authentic personalities, these ambassadors are credible supporters of the WIM Programme and they have the ability to spread an impactful moderation message among consumers and within the sector on a wide scale and thus contribute to the success of the programme in Germany.
